Reliance Globalcom boosts capacity to meet ‘bandwidth revolution’

Reliance Globalcom, the Global telecommunications services arm of Reliance Communications, upgraded capacity on Flag Europe Asia and FALCON Cable Systems to over 500 gigabytes. This 400% boost to capacity on two of the largest routes in the world comes at the wake of the “bandwidth revolution” the company said in a statement.

The two cable routes put together cater to a total of 23 countries across the world with the FEA route connecting Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the Far East and FALCON having connectivity with North America. RCom currently covers the United Kingdom, West Asia, India, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and China on the east with North America on the west. The move puts Rcom in a position to offer international Internet connectivity, the company said.

Speaking to RCR Wireless News on the long-term strategy behind the move, Punit Garg, CEO of Reliance GlobalCom said that the economic growth witnessed in the Middle East, Mediterranean Region and Indian Sub-continent over the past five years will continue to accelerate in the coming years, resulting in an exponential increase in global connectivity with the Americas, Europe, China and Far East Asia, which, so far, has sustained year-on-year growth in vicinity of 60%.

“The capacity upgrades, at marginal costs and extremely rapid time-to-market, further adds to our first-movers advantage against competing green-field projects on the same route will take a few months before they are able to commercially harness their bandwidth”, he added.

From a technical aspect, the FEA and FALCON cable systems have been upgraded to capacities of 500 GB using the next-generation 40G coherent technology. Deployment of this technology will enable connectivity at significantly faster speeds than earlier, enabling content delivery networks and Internet service providers to aggregate large traffic volumes. The increased availability of advanced connectivity backbone for carriers and enterprises in the Middle East region is expected to accelerate adoption of cloud computing and wide gamut of application services for their end-customers.

“Our growth forecast estimates that the current product and service portfolio as well as the deployment of our emerging services in the cloud computing space will significantly increase the bandwidth and connectivity solutions demand between the developed and emerging economies. The enhancement in capacities to 500 GB, with a potential to increase it to multi-terabit will further reinforce our market leadership amongst our customer segments across the globe”, said Rory Cole, COO of the carrier business unit at Reliance Globalcom.
