Malaysia 3G awards could spur consolidation

KUALA LUPUR, Malaysia—Malaysia will award three third-generation (3G) licenses through a “beauty contest” process, with licenses priced at about US$13 million. The number of licenses likely will spur consolidation in Malaysia’s mobile market, which currently has five players, industry analysts said.

The 15-year licenses will be issued in July 2002, with tender documents available in February. Services are expected to begin by late 2003 or early 2004.
