Airvana pursues inflight wireless broadband market

CHELMSFORD, Mass.-CDMA-based network infrastructure provider Airvana Inc. said it plans to begin providing inflight wireless broadband equipment to industry operators including Verizon Airfone Inc.

Airvana claimed that Verizon Airfone has been demonstrating its IP-based CDMA2000 1x EV-DO Rev. A radio base-station equipment to commercial airlines using inflight tests that have produced ground-to-air data speeds of up to 2.4 megabits per second.

“Inflight wireless broadband is an important frontier in the evolution of communications systems,” noted Randy Battat, chief executive officer of Airvana.
