Device Review: ZTE Optik – a tablet for teenagers

Most schools aren’t putting “iPad” on their lists of back-to-school supplies for students, but many teenagers are making their own lists with tablets at the top. Tablets can be useful tools for students, but many parents are not willing to invest in an iPad for the kids. (Even the refurbished first-generation iPads are still selling for more than $350.)
The ZTE Optik is one of the Android tablets that may bridge that gap between what parents will pay for and what teenagers want.

This device seems to be expensive for what it costs..i.e $99+ sprint contract or ~$300. Nexus 7 would be cheaper for the same purpose.

“(Even the refurbished first-generation iPads are still selling for more than $350.)” I think you need to do a better fact checking job. iPad2 was recently available for $349 refurbished in the Apple store.

Don’t buy this tablet. It’s a version behind in the software and you can buy a new Nexus 7 tablet from Google (the people who make Android if you didn’t know) that will get more updates than this. It’s also way cheaper with better build quality. Although it is only WiFi, your student probably wouldn’t get 3G or 4G coverage, especially Sprint coverage, inside a school building. Go with the Nexus 7 if you are even thinking about buying a tablet for your student. In my opinion, this product is for the uninformed consumer.

P.S. The Nexus 7 with 8GB of storage will be $199 and $249 with 16GB. In other words a way better deal than both the ZTE Optik and/or Kindle Fire.
