Apple suggests March 7 launch for iPad 3

The company that started the digital migration from the desktop to the mobile device chose not to set up shop at this week’s Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona. Instead, Apple issued an invitation from its Cupertino headquarters this week, inviting analysts and members of the press to an event at San Fransisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts on March 7.

The picture on the invitation suggests that the iPad 3 is ready to launch. An early March release would repeat of Apple’s pattern from last year, when it introduced the iPad 2 just ahead of the South by Southwest Interactive Festival in Austin. (That event begins March 9 this year.)

Today, Taiwan’s DigiTimes is reporting that Apple will introduce a 16GB and a 32GB iPad 3 next week, as well as an 8GB version for the first time. A move to a cheaper model would make sense now that Apple faces competition from the Kindle Fire and the possibility that other competitors will launch low-cost Windows-based tablets this year.
