New Bluetooth spec goes low power

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group has expanded the technologies scope with the launch of a new specification designed for low-powered devices that run on button-cell batteries like watches, remote controls and sports/fitness sensors. The new standard brings the technology’s base of specifications to three joining the standard specification most often used in mobile devices, and dubbed “classic,” and the more power-hungry high-speed version of the standard designed for the transfer of video, music and photos between devices.
The Bluetooth SIG noted the new specification would also have relevance in the healthcare, security, home entertainment, automotive and automation industries. The Bluetooth SIG had originally announced plans for a healthcare-focused standard in 2006.
