Sony shows picture-sharing program

Sony Corp. revealed new details about a digital photo program that is expected to allow users to view, upload and share pictures via various devices, including their televisions, computers and Web-enabled camera phones.

The Share Everywhere product is scheduled to be available starting in April and includes a Java application that the company said would be sold through wireless carriers. The program allows members of Sony’s ImageStation digital imaging Web site to use cellular phones with Internet capabilities to access and share photos and video clips.

“People want to enjoy the convenience of sharing photos from all of their devices-their phone, TV, PlayStation Portable, or computer-and be able to access them anywhere, anytime whether they are at home, at work or on the go,” said Bob Nell, vice president of ImageStation at Sony Electronics. “With this latest application, wireless service providers, handset manufacturers and mobile service aggregators can attract new customers who are looking to enhance their mobile lifestyle.”

Sony is not the only digital camera company to get involved in the camera-phone market. Hewlett-Packard Co., Eastman Kodak Co., Fujifilm and others have launched various camera-phone applications.

Although some worried that the rise of camera phones would cut into the digital camera market, so far the numbers indicate that the two markets can exist side by side.
