Futurecom 2012: Carriers advised to find partners for M2M

RIO DE JANEIRO – Telecom operators have to secure partnerships to make the machine-to-machine market take off across Brazil. During a panel held at this week’s Futurecom event, executives from carriers and vendors discussed the main challenges of developing solutions to fit in the market.

“It is really important that carriers secure strategic partnerships with specialized companies to offer M2M services,” said TIM’s Janilson Bezerra. “M2M will only happen when all players and stakeholders agree together and set a value chain that works for all of them,” added Oi’s Ronaldo Motta

As for Bruno Portnoi from Vivo, wireless brand for Telefónica, operators’ role is essential to ensure quality. “GSM is one of the possible connections to M2M, but definitely it is not the only one. Carriers wish it was all about chips, they would love it, but in fact there are many others ways, such as wi-Fi,” said Motta.

Claro’s Jacinto Miotto Neto also pointed out that 2G is not death. “We have 44% of M2M market share and we want to increase this share.”

All panelists agreed that the new law, which reduces taxes carriers have to pay annually and reduces the tax on each chip enabled, was a great step for the market. They stressed the need for a clear definition of what can be considered M2M.
