Kagan: AI and the self-driving car

We talk about artificial intelligence, but how will AI change our lives going forward?

Let’s take a closer look at the players and how they are already impacting industries like automotive. AI is one of the technologies that will redefine our world going forward. Every company in every industry will eventually jump on the AI wagon.

Early adopters will have a competitive advantage, but will also take the arrows. As the next several years pass, wave after wave of other companies will join the parade. Then it will switch from something innovative, to a simple cost of doing business. Either you are on board, or you will be losing business.

Automotive rapidly moving to self-learning car with AI

Where does your company stand in this new world? Are you an early adopter or will you come later to the party? The automotive industry is one of the industries rapidly moving into the AI world. So, let’s take a closer look at AI and automotive.

Over the last few decades, automotive innovation started with the top-line brands like Mercedes-Benz and Lexus, then eventually it would make its way down market to regular automakers. Today mid-level automakers are right up there along with luxury carmakers.

Just look at American companies like General Motors and Ford, or foreign carmakers like Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai and others. Suddenly, automakers are rapidly adopting new technology and are now starting to use AI and are talking about being a self-learning car.

In automotive, AI is increasingly involved with improving the user experience. With all the talk recently about self-driving cars, AI is playing a major role in that as well. However, as advanced as the automotive industry is today, remember we are still in the very early days of this new revolution.

Today, we are at the same place as Henry Ford was with the first Model T. Exciting as hell and advanced far beyond anything we ever thought of before. However, the automotive industry kept growing in leaps and bounds and got better year after year. It’s the same with AI, self-driving and self-learning cars today: we are just in the very early stages of this incredible revolution.

This means there are incredible opportunities and risks for workers, investors, executives and anyone with a new and ground breaking idea. We are rapidly moving into a time of incredible innovation and change.

Smart cars and self-learning cars are as much computers as vehicles. This means there are incredible new growth opportunities in other industries merging with automotive. Industries like software, computing systems, wireless and more.

Security plays an important role as well. After all, if the car is continually wirelessly connected, sharing data and updating its system there are plenty of areas where the bad guys can get in and take control. So, security must play a very high role in the whole process that is unfolding in front of us today.

Another big challenge is making this new technology understandable by regular human beings. Users don’t want to learn and shouldn’t have to. There must be an easy to use and understand operating system, which is a place the high-tech world has often failed, at least initially.

The future looks very bright for this entire sector. Now, widen your focus beyond the automotive sector to every other industry. Think about retail, health care and more. There is so much growth coming in the next generation and this is that special time in our lives when we can embrace it and build our future on it.
