Reports: Apple to build high-speed network

Apple is potentially betting big on content delivery services like streaming music, video

Published reports suggest that tech juggernaut Apple could deploy its very own high-speed network linking four U.S. data centers, and specialized for content delivery purposes.

Bloomberg first broke the story on Monday, but Apple representatives have yet to issue any sort of statement or response to the reports.

Currently, Apple relies on third-party communications service provider networks to deliver services like iCloud and iTunes.

In its report, Bloomberg attributes the news to “people familiar with the plans.”

The news also comes as Apple is expected to unveil a new music-streaming service today during its Worldwide Developers Conference.

That type of content service would benefit from a proprietary high speed network.

Apple operates data centers in California, Oregon, Nevada and North Carolina.

Bloomberg’s sources said the goal is to provide long-haul data transport between the data centers, as well access to metropolitan markets.

Delivery of media content like music and video is regarded as the key driver of the mobile data explosions.
