Real-time traffic and passenger information management systems in development for LatAm market

Networking giant Ericsson is partnering with Volvo’s Latin American business unit that sells buses for public transit to bring electronic intelligence to traffic and passenger management systems.

Ericsson will develop, deploy, support and maintain traffic and passenger information management technology, which will enhance urban transport by providing real-time insights into conditions.

Part of Ericsson’s networked industry and society business line, the technology will allow bus operators to track the bus fleet and look at travel time, punctuality and where on routes each bus is located. The idea is to tailor the bus routes based on passenger and traffic flow to increase operational efficiency and decrease operational expenses.

For passengers, the partnership will enable online access via a smartphone application, text or call, to bus arrival times making for easier travel and, hopefully, more customer satisfaction.

Luis Carlos Pimenta, president of Volvo Bus Latin America, said the partnership “will improve urban mobility in cities.”

Ericsson’s research and development team will fine-tune the needed components at the Ericsson Innovation Center in Indaiatuba, Brazil.

“This partnership is evidence of the transformation that is making so many aspects of daily life easier as we move into the networked society,” Sergio Quiroga, president of Ericsson Latin America said.

“Both transport operators and their users will receive benefits from the increased deployment of technology and, together with Volvo Bus Latin America, we are enabling this,” he said.

Ericsson officials emphasized the future of connected industries and societies during presentations at Mobile World Congress 2015, which was held in Barcelona, Spain, back in February.

In this presentation, Orvar Hurtig, VP of business line industry and society, discusses Ericsson’s plans to connect the transportation, public safety and utility sectors.
