Sprint targets T-Mobile US with latest trade-in promotion

Sprint offering guarantees $200 trade-in credit

Sprint continues to bolster its competitive position, announcing today that it would provide T-Mobile US customers who switch their allegiance to Sprint with $200 in guaranteed trade-in credit for their T-Mobile US device.

The offer requires current T-Mobile US customers to take their working device into a Sprint store and sign up for a new line of service. Customers will then receive at least $200 in in-store credit. The offer is being offered through April 9.

Sprint will continue to offer up to $350 in credit to any customer that brings their number to the carrier from Verizon Wireless, AT&T Mobility or T-Mobile US, with the latest bonus so far targeted at just T-Mobile US.

T-Mobile US earlier this month announced robust fourth-quarter customer growth, boasting of 2.1 million net additions, which has so far paced the market, and is more than double the 1 million net additions reported by Sprint. As part of its announcement, T-Mobile US said it had a 2.2 to 1 positive porting ratio with Sprint during Q4, which was well above the 1.4 to 1 positive postpaid porting ratio with Verizon Wireless and 1.8 to 1 positive porting ratio with AT&T Mobility. T-Mobile US added that the porting trends continued into the new year.

“Porting ratios have been in our favor vs. the competition for seven consecutive quarters, and it looks like we will continue to beat everyone on total postpaid phone adds as well,” said T-Mobile US CEO John Legere in a statement.

Sprint management recently noted that it needed to remain aggressive in terms of marketing new offers in order to reverse past customer trends. Those moves are expected to hit the carrier’s bottom line in the short-term, but Sprint has noted the moves are necessary to bolster recurring revenues.
