Getting past the NFV babble

Few would argue that NFV has become the talk of the telecom space, with vendors, operators, standards groups and industry analysts all working on getting a handle on and advancing the move towards software-based network virtualization.

RCR Wireless News spoke with Ken Dilbeck, VP of collaboration research and development at the TM Forum, to get a better understanding of where the market is in terms of NFV support and where the industry needs to focus in terms of advancing NFV.

In terms of best practices telecom operators need to consider when looking at NFV deployments and the impact those moves can have, Dilbeck noted:

–Applying devops in a transition netops environment, taking into account impacts to skill set, mindset, organization and culture.

–Impact to change in procurement in terms of buying commodity hardware and what it really means to “buy a virtual network function,” including how is it specified, licensed and deployed.

–The need to establish a holistic view of end-to-end service measurement and management. Management in the broadest sense, not just fault and performance, but including regulatory compliance, monetization, taxation, etc.

–What does it really mean for operators to participate in a digital value fabric/ecosystem where service composition is done across administrative domains and the operator role is changed to participant not controller.
