iPhone 6 accessories hit the market (RCR Mobile Minute)

The exact dimensions of the new iPhone 6 were a closely guarded secret until Tuesday, but by Wednesday consumers could purchase any one of a number of colorful iPhone 6 cases from a variety of third-party vendors. The market for smartphone cases is valued at more than $500 million by ABI Research, and the firm estimates that 80% of iPhone users buy a case. So it’s no surprise that a number of manufacturers invested time and money in creating cases for a product that they couldn’t see or touch.
“We do an extensive amount of research because of course the phone’s a secret,” said Scott Franklin, director of marketing at Tessco’s Ventev Mobile. “We work with a variety of different people to try to collect the information and kind of triangulate what we get to see if we can confirm which pieces of information are accurate and which are not. There’s a deal risk that goes into it because we don’t really know for sure. We do feel confident that what we did see yesterday was consistent with what we thought we would see. When the phone comes out, all of the manufacturers, like us, will be in line to make sure once and for all that it does in fact fit. But we feel really confident in what we were able to collect. We’ve got some history, we’ve done it for the past iPhones.”
