Tackling the spectrum challenge: What impact will spectrum auctions have on wireless space

Spectrum has always been a lynchpin of the mobile industry, perhaps even more so over the past few years as consumers have flocked to data-hungry devices and applications that have taxed the infrastructure of wireless carriers.

In an attempt to feed the need for more spectrum, the Federal Communications Commission recently completed a small spectrum auction and plans to hold two more significant events over the next 18 months. The auctions are set to re-shape the wireless industry and set the stage for the competitive environment over the next decade.

As part of an editorial series looking at the spectrum market, RCR Wireless News spoke with industry analyst Bill Ho from 556 Ventures and Washington, D.C., insider Jeff Silva of Medley Global Advisors to get their opinions on where the market is heading, how wireless carriers are preparing for the battle and challenges the government is facing in executing these industry altering auction proceedings.

RCR Wireless News also conducted a webinar on the topic, which included Competitive Carriers Association President and CEO Steve Berry.
