With the Rio Olympics starting later this week in host city Rio de Janeiro, the state of mobile networks is a concern. Projections suggest the Rio Olympics, like its predecessors, will break the record for social media usage. OpenSignal released a survey showing that Rio not only got an LTE boost for the Olympics, it also noted that, since its first Brazil report last August (check it here), 4G availability has improved at a constant rate. Brazil still ranks near the bottom of the list for 4G availability among its Latin American and global peers.
Last year, OpenSignal CEO Brendan Gill said he wasn’t sure what to expect when the crowds descend on Brazil for the Rio Olympics. From that interview: “We can’t say for sure as we can’t yet test what will happen when millions of people come to Brazil next year.”
The company said it examined the performance of Brazil’s mobile networks, drawing on more than 85 million measurements collected by 45,000 users of its app between February and April 2016. RCR Wireless News did a video interview with Gill, also the co-founder of OpenSignal, to get the details of the survey.
