Genband scores court victory in patent case against Metaswitch

Texas jury found Metaswitch infringed on 7 Genband patents linked to VoIP technology

Genband late last week claimed a court victory in patent case against Metaswitch Networks, with a jury finding infringement of seven Genband patents related to voice-over-IP technology.

According to Genband, a jury in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas found evidence Metaswitch products contained patented Genband technology. Those products included Metaswitch’s Session Border Controllers, Integrated Softswitches, Call Feature Servers, Universal Media Gateways and MTAS platform with both Accession and Commportal software.

The verdict included the awarding of $8.1 million to Genband in damages for violation of its patents between January 2014 and August 2015. Genband, which filed the lawsuit in January 2014, added it plans to seek a permanent injunction “and other relief from Metaswitch’s infringement.”

Metaswitch was direct with its response, downplaying any impact the decision could have on operations.

“Patent litigations are often filed in the technology industry,” Metaswitch CEO Martin Lund noted. “The verdict in no way affects Metaswitch’s operational or financial stability, its commitment to continued innovation or the ongoing development of, and support for, its products.”

Metaswitch last August scored a deal with AT&T to provide its Perimea SBC to power a portion of AT&T’s software-based network operations. Metaswitch said the product is designed to allow AT&T to interconnect its LTE network traffic with other operators via the SBCs deployed as virtualized network functions.
