Apple looks to extend iPhone battery life by 25 hours

Apple announced new battery charger case for iPhone 6 and 6S; retails for $99

Smartphone battery life is a constant source of frustration for everyone from business travelers to social media fiends. And now, tech giant Apple has quietly debuted a new Smart Battery Case.

According to a product order page, the new case enables a user to, “Charge your iPhone and battery case simultaneously for increased talk time up to 25 hours, Internet use up to 18 hours on LTE, and even longer audio and video playback.”

The Smart Battery Case comes in white and charcoal colors and has a “soft microfiber lining on the inside [that] helps protect your iPhone, while the soft elastomer hinge design makes it easy to put the case on and take it off again. On the outside, the silky, soft-touch finish of the silicone exterior feels great in your hand.”

The new product uses Apple’s proprietary Lightning port to charge.

And, as is this case with virtually any new device, the reviews are starting to trickle in and some of them aren’t very favorable.

Over at The Verge, Lauren Goode writes that the new case will give your iPhone a “badunkabump. Design is a big word, and it encompasses many things, and it is a religion at Apple, so maybe I should say ‘looks.’ The case has a bump. It’s the first thing you’re going to notice when you see it. And it’s not a look-at-the-way-the-lens-extends-from-the-body bump, it’s a my-iPhone-ate-my-iPod bump. It looks like you tried to shove a few too many credit cards and ID cards into the back of your iPhone case. The top and bottom of the Smart Battery Case hug your phone, which is supposed to offer a more comfortable grip when you’re actually using the phone. It’s a stark contrast from the solid curved back of something like a Mophie.”

She concludes, “In either case this will probably sell like hot cakes. It fits nicely in holiday stockings. ‘Tis the season. Just know that from a pure performance and even a design perspective, Apple’s effort is not the best you can get.”
