With ‘UC One’ BroadSoft looks at potential of UC, CaaS

Telecom operators want to avoid becoming dumb pipe. They are looking for ways to increase their revenue with value-added services that complement their regular voice and data services. Several surveys have already highlighted the advance of telecom providers into the cloud computing service market, and Gartner Research principal analyst Elia San Miguel noted that carriers are looking to add communication as a service (CaaS) and unified communications (UC) technologies to their portfolios to enhance their presence in the corporate market.

BroadSoft is eyeing this potential market with its launch of UC One, an open unified communications platform aimed at telecommunication service providers. BroadSoft’s costumers are service providers that adapt and resell its solutions to other firms.

“There’s a lot of activity around value-added services because carriers don’t want to become dumb pipe,” Leslie Ferry, vice president of marketing of BroadSoft, told RCR Wireless News. Ferry believes that the market will see much more innovation coming from carriers.

As Ferry explained, UC One focuses on four major areas (user experience, mobility, openness and market-ready packages) and provides a single platform for service providers to design and introduce a comprehensive set of communication solutions for the market segments they serve, including micro-businesses,  small and medium businesses, as well as large enterprises.

In addition, BroadSoft also released a global peering program, dubbed Xtended Connect, that enables its service provider customers to deliver high-definition (HD) voice and video calling beyond their existing network footprint. Michael Tessler, president and CEO at BroadSoft, noted that today service providers are primarily limited to supporting high-definition calls for customers within their own network.

Currently, BroadSoft has 500 customers in 71 countries, including 18 of the 25 largest telecommunication service providers based on revenue, according to Ferry.
