Telecommunications jobs continued to trend downward in June, with 869,900 telecom positions nationwide, according to data from the U.S. Department of Labor Statistics. The wireless sector reported 2,000 fewer positions from a year ago. That data, which lags a month behind overall statistics, showed 166,600 people employed in May. A 3,500-position drop occurred from April to May, according to the data, although the labor bureau cautions against month-to-month comparisions, which may be impacted by seasonal adjustments. Indeed, the telecom data for April and May is still preliminary data.
The wired telecom sector, which has been hit with steady decreases for the last two years, ticked up 1,100 positions from April to May to 575,500 positions, but again show a year-to-year loss of 23,800 positions, down 3.9%.
The computer and electronic products sector continued it upward trend, with 1.12 million positions in June, up 2,000 positions month over month and up 24,000 positions year over year. In the semiconductor subsector, another 13,500 positions were added from the year-ago period. The labor bureau now counts 384,000 positions in the sector.
