IPWireless partners with Teleca for UMTS TDD devices

Wireless technology companies Teleca and IPWireless announced a new partnership the companies said will speed the development of new mobile phones and data devices working on the UMTS TDD network standard. The companies said they will work with Sweden’s Wireless System Integration to form the TDD Design Center, a development and testing ground for such gadgets.

“The market for UMTS TDD is rapidly expanding, and the need for effective development of new mobile broadband devices based on this exciting technology is readily apparent,” said Markus Enholm, vice president at Teleca System Design and head of the TDD Design Center. “We look forward to working with IPWireless, operators and manufacturers to expand the UMTS TDD ecosystem as quickly as possible and help operators deliver the mobile broadband services their customers want.”

UMTS TDD, also known as TD-CDMA, is a variant of the third-generation UMTS standard for wireless communications, and has been defined by the Third Generation Partnership Project. The standard uses Time-Division-Duplexing technology, while the more popular W-CDMA 3G standard uses Frequency Division Duplexing technology. Teleca and IPWireless said their new TDD Design Center will enable device manufacturers to introduce new UMTS TDD-enabled devices within a shorter timeframe, with lowered research-and-development costs and superior service and support.

Those deploying or testing UMTS TDD networks include IQ Networks in Australia, Airdata in Germany, IPMobile and NTT Communications in Japan, and Maui Sky Fiber in the United States.<
