IDC: Vertical markets offer IT bright spots

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.-Although the sluggish economy has hurt a variety of information-technology companies-including those selling wireless wares-research firm IDC said verticals such as manufacturing, banking, health care and insurance represent bright opportunities.

“The worldwide economy ended 2002 much weaker,” said Anne Lu, IDC’s senior analyst for worldwide vertical markets. “As a result, IT budgets were negatively impacted as the year progressed, and industries struggled to manage costs and meet profit goals. However, certain vertical markets still present bright IT opportunities depending on regions and industries.”

IDC said the discrete manufacturing and banking sectors will be the biggest overall IT spenders, accounting for 13 percent and 12 percent, respectively, of the worldwide IT opportunity. Other potential verticals include the government sector, construction and services.
