FCC to try to speed E911 deployment

WASHINGTON-The Federal Communications Commission is launching a wireless enhanced 911 implementation initiative. The first meeting of the initiative is set for April 29, said FCC Commissioner Kathleen Abernathy, who announced the initiative at a Senate Communications subcommittee hearing.

Details of the plan are sketchy, but Abernathy said it would bring stakeholders together to speed deployment of E911 services. Phase II deployment requires cooperation between wireless carriers, local exchange carriers and public safety answering points.
