China Telecom discontinues call-forwarding service

BEIJING-Following strong opposition from cellular carriers China Mobile and China Unicom, fixed-line operator China Telecom discontinued a controversial service allowing users to forward incoming mobile calls to their fixed-line telephones by installing an inexpensive device.

In China, mobile users pay for making calls as well as receiving calls. The new service could have dented the mobile carriers’ revenues.

The service was launched 28 December in southern Guangdong province.
