Timing not right for more mobile licenses in China

BEIJING-In an interview with China Central Television (CCTV), Minister of Information Industry (MII) Wu Jichuan said it is not the right time for China to introduce more mobile-phone licenses. “It is necessary to introduce competition to the sector, but too much competition is harmful,” the minister added.

China has two mobile and four fixed-line carriers. Two of the four fixed-line carriers, China Telecom and China Netcom, are angling for mobile licenses. Wu did not specify when the companies might be successful, although it is expected they will be granted when the ministry issues third-generation (3G) licenses to mobile carriers China Mobile and China Unicom.
