Russian carrier to become second GSM operator in Tajikistan

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia—The St. Petersburg-based North-Western GSM carrier was licensed by the communications ministry of the Central Asian republic of Tajikistan to create a second GSM network in the country.

The license was issued to the Russian-Tajik joint venture TT Mobile, in which the North-Western GSM has a 75-percent stake. The JV was created in August 2001.

“Tajikistan will become our first regional project on the territory of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS),” which unites 12 former Soviet republics, said North-Western GSM Director General Igor Nikodimov.

TT Mobile plans to launch its network into commercial operation in February 2002.
