KPMG to study smart card use

NEW YORK-KPMG L.L.P. will conduct a survey to measure smart card use in North America, according to an Aug. 6 announcement of The Smart Card Alliance, formed earlier this year by the combination of the Smart Card Forum and the Smart Card Industry Forum.

The survey will ask the top 10 smart card manufacturers supplying the U.S. and Canadian markets to report on unit shipments in 10 industry categories, including wireless, financial and retail services.

The first survey will cover shipments made in 1999, 2000 and the first half of 2001, and its results will be made public in October at the Alliance’s annual meeting. In early 2002, KPMG will conduct a follow-up survey covering the second half of this year.

“The U.S. and Canadian smart card markets have experienced significant growth over the past several years. The purpose of the survey is to quantify this growth by industry and distribute the results to our members and interested third parties,” said Dan A. Cunningham, chairman of the Alliance’s market research committee.
