Psion works on netBook project

LONDON-Psion plc has teamed with One-Ed Dot Com, a Malaysia-based joint venture between the Kedah State Development Corp., L.M. Ericsson, Widuri Canggih Sdn Bhd and Virtual Applications Technology Sdn Bhd, on an “e-school” project that may make traditional hard-copy textbooks obsolete.

The Psion netBooks will be powered by the Symbian OS, supplied by One-Ed Dot Com, and Ericsson will serve as the local technology partner. Students will be able to access educational content and school curriculums via both fixed and wireless communication capabilities.

The initiative covers about 4,000 secondary students and 650 teachers at 50 Malaysian schools, beginning in June. If it is successful, One-Ed Dot Com said its hopes to replace textbooks with “eBooks” in all Malaysian schools by 2004.
