Mobile dominates Uganda’s telephony

Dear Editor:

Just like the countries quoted in “Report says mobile to dominate within five years,” on page 1 of the November-December 1999 issue, Uganda’s telephony is dominated by mobile services. Wireless currently accounts for 63 percent of the total lines.

Uganda has about 112,0000 lines, and of these, 60,000 were added in just a year since MTN Uganda started offering mobile services in October 1998. By mid-2000, mobile is expected to account for over 75 percent of the total telephone lines.
