TELIGENT ADDS 5 CITIES TO `98 LAUNCH PLANS

VIENNA, Va.-Teligent Inc. reported a net loss of $59.1 million for the second quarter on revenues of about $143,000, reflecting the company’s continued expenditures for network engineering, sales and marketing as it approaches its planned commercial launch this fall.

Revenues were down from $1 million for the same quarter last year. Net loss was up from $43.9 million for the year-ago quarter.

Teligent said it raised its target number of cities to launch commercial service in this year from 10 to 15 markets. In addition to the 10 previously announced markets, Teligent plans to launch service in New York; San Francisco-Oakland; San Jose, Calif.; Miami; and Jacksonville, Fla.

Major accomplishments for Teligent during the second quarter include implementing a permanent local number portability solution in Houston, Dallas and San Antonio, Texas; integrating Northern Telecom Ltd.’s point-to-multipoint equipment into its fixed wireless local network in Los Angeles; and the closing of an $800 million bank credit facility, effectively replacing an earlier letter of commitment for $780 million from Nortel.

Teligent also began serving its phase-one customers in Chicago; Dallas; Houston; San Antonio, Texas; and Orlando, Fla.; and anticipates launching its local, long-distance and high-speed data and Internet services in Los Angeles by the end of the third quarter.
