CANADIAN OPERATOR DEVELOPS WORLDWIDE ROAMING NETWORK

TORONTO-Rogers Cantel Mobile Communications Inc. has developed a system that will allow subscribers to roam all over the world with a special cellular phone.

Customers buy or rent a Worldwide phone and are issued a Subscriber Identity Module card to go with it.

Users turn off their regular phone when they leave Canada, and turn on the Worldwide phone at their foreign destination. All calls to their regular Cantel phone number are routed to the Cantel Worldwide handset. Outgoing calls are handled as they usually are and all calls are billed on the regular Cantel invoice, the company said.

The Worldwide phone is now available to Canadian Airlines Gold and President Club members through a special promotion. It will be available to all customers in September.

“We’re in the business of developing products that fill our customers’ needs, and this is another in a list of such services that Cantel has brought to market,” said Kent Thexton, vice president of marketing for Cantel.

Other services Cantel expects to introduce in the next year include calling line ID, two-way paging, short messaging, extended battery life, home base station and wireless office.

Rogers Cantel Mobile is a subsidiary of Rogers Communications Inc. Cantel reports 1.2 million cellular customers and 219,800 paging subscribers.
