NORTEL GSM-BASED PCS TO BE TESTED BY CLEARNET

PICKERING, Ontario-Clearnet Communications Inc. and Northern Telecom will test personal communications services based on Nortel’s Global System for Mobile communications technology platform, Clearnet announced.

The GSM trial was scheduled to begin last month and continue for at least four months, Clearnet said. Testing will be conducted in the Kitchener-Waterloo area of Ontario using Nortel’s GSM handsets, cell sites and infrastructure.

Clearnet, based in Pickering, Ontario, is pursuing a Canadian PCS license. As announced in April, Clearnet also plans to test Code Division Multiple Access technology.

Clearnet recently began building Canada’s first fully integrated digital network, said the company, offering mobile telephone, text messaging, dispatch and mobile data services on one network, accessible through one handset.
