Trading firm to provide free i-mode services

TOKYO-Marubeni Telecom will start providing free home page services for i-mode users on 25 October, the firm announced. Users of the services can store pictures, characters and incoming call melodies on their home pages using i-mode.

Users also can display this content to other i-mode users. The firm is targeting to win 70,000 users by fiscal year 2000 and 300,000 users by fiscal year 2001.

Marubeni Telecom is a subsidiary of Marubeni Corp., a major Japanese trading firm. The firm is selling cellular terminals, producing content for browser phones and offering voice mail services.

Free home page services are quite common for PC Internet users; however, the Marubeni Telecom service is the first of its kind for i-mode and wireless Internet users.
