Job figures in the telecommunications space remained steady in Silicon Valley last month, according to new statistics released by the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Preliminary figures showed telecommunication jobs for the San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara area at 5.9 thousand, marginally up from last month’s 5.8. The number of telecom employees in the area has remained between 5.7 and 5.9 since mid 2009.
Meanwhile, Semiconductor and related device manufacturing jobs in the Valley also remained constant at 28.8 thousand in June, unchanged from the numbers in May and only slightly up from April’s 28.5.
“The numbers have been pretty steady throughout 2011,” said Dave Kong, a statistician with the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
An employment report from Mountain View based outsourcing firm Elance, however, had higher job projections for software and app developers in the area.
“Demand for Android skills rose by 15% while the demand for Blackberry skills increased slightly by 3% and Windows Phone declined by 37%,” Elance reported.
Those specializing in Apple’s iOS, however, were the biggest software winners “as demand for iOS Programmers and Xcode skills showed impressive increases of 20% and 35% respectively.”
Elance attributes this increase in demand to recent announcements at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June.
