Senator to push for registration of SIM cards- Philippines

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – Senator Vicente Sotto III will push anew for the registration of pre-paid subscriber identity module (SIM) cards following the bombing of a passenger bus in Makati City last Tuesday that killed five passengers and injured 14 others.

Sotto recalled during a visit here that when he was chairman of the Senate committee on public services in 2000, he also wanted to have all pre-paid SIM cards registered but the proposal faced stiff opposition from telephone companies.

The National Telecommunications Commission in fact came up with a directive to that effect in 2000 but the telephone companies were obtained a temporary restraining order from a court that remained in effect until 2009, according to Sotto.

With the bombing in Makati, there is now an urgent reason to review his call to register all pre-paid SIM cards, Sotto said.
