T-Mobile and Sprint duke it out as carrier price war heats up

Three days after Sprint slashed mobile data prices, T-Mobile US fired back with an offer that could turn its customers into ambassadors for its network. The “un-carrier” is offering a year of unlimited LTE data to Simple Choice customers who bring in a new customer from another carrier. Customers who take advantage of the plan will get unlimited LTE at no additional charge, as will the new subscribers they recruit.
The offer begins next week, and will also be extended to Simple Choice customers who already have unlimited LTE data. Those people will get a $10 monthly credit for 12 months if they bring in someone new.
Sprint quickly responded with an offer of its own: unlimited talk, text and data for $60/month. To qualify for the plan, new and existing customers must bring their own compatible device or purchase a device for full retail price on the Sprint Easy Pay plan.
Earlier this week, Sprint launched a limited-time promotional package for customers that port their number from another service provider. For $100 per month switchers will get up to 10 lines of service to share 20 GB of data and unlimited voice calling and messaging.
“Only a ‘carrier’ would be arrogant enough to make an offer limited only to new prospects, while forgetting their existing customers,” said Mike Sievert, chief marketing officer for T-Mobile US, in today’s press release. Apparently Sprint was also thinking about that issue, because today’s offer includes current customers.
T-Mobile’s unlimited LTE data offer comes less than two weeks after the “un-carrier” said that it will throttle users on unlimited LTE data plans who do not abide by its terms and conditions. Customers who use the LTE network for peering and tethering are subject to throttling in some cases.
