New executive appointments by Deutsche Telekom and T-Mobile US – plus Nokia and Orange as recent examples – show how the telecoms, tech, and industrial sectors are converging as a single AI infrastructure stack – and quite how important networking has become.

Hardly surprising, but there is a new cross-pollination of leadership positions between the telecoms industry, the (big) tech sector, and industrial markets. There always has been, to an extent, along with notable movement in crossover sub-segments besides – such as in the IoT sector, which saw regular poaching of captains-of-industry by tech and telco firms for years. There is an easy three-way revolving door policy with system integrator and global consulting outfits, too. But recent appointments of AWS and Shell execs by Deutsche Telekom in Germany and T-Mobile in the US, respectively, are the latest in a busy recruitment line that leads directly to a new corporate boardroom door – behind which all the sides are represented, with a view to build and monetize the global AI economy.
Deutsche Telekom has just appointed Jan Hofmeyr as head of product and technology; he joins from AWS, where he most recently ran the telecoms segment, and previously led ‘edge services’. He joined AWS from Comcast, where he spent more than a decade, eventually as chief technology officer – which he joined after seven years in charge of TV strategy at Microsoft. So that’s the swing-door right there – opening to internet services, cloud computing, media streaming, some generations of cellular, and a long career already. It is a useful illustration of what the telcos now want from their leadership teams: “experience, renewal, and international tech expertise” – said Deutsche Telekom itself. Tim Höttges, chief executive at the firm, said Hofmeyr “knows both sides of the field”.
He went further: “Jan knows the telecoms industry… [and] the world of international tech platforms, the pace of cloud and digital business models, and the tremendous momentum created by AI. That is exactly the combination we need now.” Specifically, this kind of cross-sector knowhow is “very important for the next phase” of Deutsche Telekom’s “network development and technological transformation”, it said. Höttges added, besides: “You can recognize a strong company by how it brings its next generation into positions of responsibility in good time. That is what we are doing now.” Hofmeyr talked about his new employer’s “ability to industrialize technology at scale”, and his new task to “bring networks, cloud, AI, and digital platforms even closer together”.
The new telco CTO
Meanwhile across the pond, through the other door, T-Mobile US has appointed Jessica Uhl from energy tech company GE Vernova as chief financial officer (designate), to succeed Peter Osvaldik in February. Uhl has spent 30 years in the energy sector, most recently as president at GE Vernova, in charge of its corporate development and strategy, as well as its generative AI programme, and almost two decades at Shell, including five years as its CFO. Really, it’s a straighter appointment – about capital allocation, infrastructure investment, and complex international operations, which might be considered familiar across big multinationals. But GE Vernova is at the intersection of energy, infrastructure, software, electrification, and AI – and so there’s a new-look telco logic to it, as well.

But you stack these appointments, and you get a clearer signal: that the new telco CTO looks less like a network engineer and more like a tech-platform strategist, and, more so, that the chief looks increasingly like an AI gadgetry spod. Indeed, the biggest of the bunch was Nokia’s recruitment last year (2025) of chief executive Justin Hotard from Intel – replacing Pekka Lundmark, hired by the Finnish firm in 2020 as a veteran of older-industry (including energy company Fortum and crane maker Konecranes). Hotard ran the data center and AI group at Intel, following senior roles also at HPE. There is irony, perhaps, that his “supercycle” strategy to pursue faster big-ticket AI networking opportunities with hyperscalers and frontier firms has seen Nokia put its seminal Industry 4.0 units up for sale.
But then nothing is so simplistic: in another about-turn, Emma Falck, formerly in charge of energy management and automation products for buildings in the ‘smart infrastructure’ (buildings) division at German Industry 4.0 aristocrat Siemens, has just joined (September) as president of Nokia’s ‘mobile infrastructure’ (cellular networks) business. Falck has worked previously at Boston Consulting Group and elevator-maker KONE – just to extend and confuse the point. “As AI moves toward physical AI, networks need to become AI-native by design for both 5G Advanced and 6G,” remarked Hotard of her appointment – and so we should probably amend the earlier line about Nokia quitting Industry 4.0, and be clear that it just wants out of the edge (private-campus) part of it.
New telco AI officer
There are always examples and counter-examples, but it is hard to make the case that the industry’s poaching of industrial talent has let up since the late 2010s and early 2020s, when the 5G buzz was all about sensor-like or fiber-like (mMTC / URLLC) wireless ‘machine-type’ comms – when the likes of Nokia and Ericsson and Verizon and Vodafone (et al) sought execs who understood how to design and deploy (sell) 5G-related systems for industrial set-ups. A better example of the newer tech-ways influx is the appointment of Pallavi Mahajan as chief technology and AI officer – also from Intel, where she was corporate vice president and general manager of data center and AI software, also in 2025. Hotard cited her expertise “at the intersection of AI, mobile, and edge computing”.
Nokia is just the most obvious case study. Everyone is at it, pretty much – as they always have been; but ‘AI officer’ is a gateway role. Orange’s newly-appointed group chief AI officer, Usman Javaid, has a career spanning Orange, Vodafone, and AWS, covering cloud, IoT, networks, marketing. So Orange’s AI leadership has crossover pedigree. It is not one way traffic either: Javaid replaced Steve Jarrett at Orange, who said in June he was joining Anthropic – with a view to help the model builder adapt its products to European and African markets. Orange had appointed Jarrett as its first senior AI leader because AI was becoming a strategic function rather than an IT function. Either way, the result is a genuine tech-infrastructure talent loop, then – in Finland and France, as examples.
Of course, this executive migration is only reflective of the institutional cross-pollination with AI infrastructure. There are plenty of examples of working groups – which have similarly shifted focus through the lifetime of 5G, from crucial 3GPP rounds with industrialists into interconnect, subsea, and metro-grid alliances, plus developing ‘AI-native 6G working groups’, with hyper-scale cloud and AI firms: Nvidia’s AI-native 6G coalition with BT, Deutsche Telekom, Ericsson, Nokia, SK Telecom, and T-Mobile; the 130-plus-member AI-RAN Alliance; GSMA’s Open Telco AI project with AT&T, AMD, and TensorWave; TM Forum’s AI-native ODA work.
Not telecoms anymore
And to some degree, the logic is plain: telecoms is not a sector in isolation, anymore – and maybe, at a glance, not a sector at all, but an adjunct to the all-conquering AI infrastructure market. The cellular part of telecoms is just a laggard, still waiting for the AI to exit the grand fiber-optical loop – and go mobile with drones and robots, and whatever else. The cross-ways talent flow is quickening, but remains a trickle – for now. In the meantime, data-center interconnect and long-haul terrestrial and subsea fiber, which used to sit very comfortably inside the telco purview, are more like a sub-set of the new cloud mechanics. Nokia’s acquisition of Infinera, Corning’s rapidly expanding AI fibre business, hyper-scale ownership of subseas systems – all point this way.
The same is true of power and land, as the other choke points in the AI rollout – which spiralling AI cap-ex investments seek to solve. Telecoms is no longer an industry that builds and operates networks, but a layer in a larger infrastructure stack – as repeated until it is almost meaningless. This executive migration, as illustrated lately by Deutsche Telekom and T-Mobile US, is more than just a reshuffling of corporate talent; it is a bigger redrawing of industry boundaries as big tech and big telecoms, together with big industry, build the same infrastructure economy from different ends.
