Singtel pilots 50Gbps fiber broadband to support AI

Singtel said the trial also lays the groundwork for next-generation Wi-Fi, autonomous devices, and AI-generated entertainment formats

In sum – what to know:

50Gbps fiber trial launches – Singtel becomes the first operator in Singapore to test 50Gbps XGS-PON, targeting AI-heavy, immersive and multi-device digital use cases.

AI drives bandwidth demand – The trial addresses rising expectations for low latency, reliability and multi-gig speeds as AI-powered applications scale in homes and businesses.

Future-ready national strategy – The initiative supports Singapore’s Digital Connectivity Blueprint and positions the country at the forefront of next-generation fibre innovation.

Singaporean carrier Singtel has launched what it claims to be the country’s first technical trial of 50Gbps XGS-PON fiber broadband, marking a major step toward preparing homes and businesses for AI-driven applications, immersive media, and next-generation digital services expected to scale over the next three to five years.

The 50Gbps XGS-PON trial is designed to support emerging use cases such as augmented, virtual and mixed reality, cloud gaming, AI-enabled smart homes, and advanced enterprise connectivity.

According to Deloitte’s 2025 connected consumer survey, households worldwide are increasingly integrating remote work, virtual services, and immersive media into everyday life. With multiple AI-driven, data-intensive applications running simultaneously, users are demanding faster speeds, lower latency, and more reliable broadband connections, the Asian carrier noted.

Through the trial, Singtel will assess network performance and capabilities required to support dense, multi-device environments shaped by AI usage. The initiative is positioned as a foundation for future mass deployment across residential and commercial segments as digital lifestyles continue to evolve.

“Digital technologies are deeply embedded in everyday life in Singapore, supported by near-universal internet access, high device ownership, and widespread use of online communication and digital services across work, learning and entertainment. This next evolution in fiber broadband connectivity helps ensure that homes and businesses can continue to support increasingly immersive and AI-enabled digital experiences,” said Ng Tian Chong, CEO at Singtel Singapore.

Singtel said its early adoption of 50Gbps fiber aligns with Singapore’s digital connectivity blueprint, which aims to build a future-ready national digital infrastructure and position the Asian country at the forefront of next-generation connectivity.

The 50Gbps XGS-PON trial enables whole-home, multi-gigabit connectivity to support use cases including ultra-high-definition 8K and future 12K video streaming, high-fidelity AR/VR/XR experiences, cloud gaming, and cloud-based PCs. It also supports data-intensive professional workflows, secure enterprise connectivity for remote workers, and emerging applications such as telemedicine, real-time diagnostics, and AI-driven smart homes with dense IoT ecosystems.

Singtel said the trial also lays the groundwork for next-generation Wi-Fi, autonomous devices, and AI-generated entertainment formats.

During a keynote speech at Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2025, Anna Yip, CEO of international digital services at Singtel, said the carrier was accelerating Singapore’s role as a global testbed for digital innovation by embedding artificial intelligence (AI) across its operations and launching advanced 5G network slicing across key industries.

Singtel has commercially deployed 5G network slicing at major events and is extending use cases to healthcare, ports and security, she added.

Meanwhile, AI is being embedded into Singtel’s operations, customer care and business models, with a goal to train 100% of staff and create AI practitioners, Yip added.

Yip emphasized that the telco is now driving the next wave of digital transformation in the region through the twin engines of AI and 5G.
