Canadian carrier Rogers Communications has expanded its rollout of Wi-Fi 7, the latest generation of wireless technology, to customers in Quebec, building on its initial launch in Calgary earlier this year.
In a release, Rogers said the Wi-Fi 7 service aims to provide faster, more stable home internet for data-heavy households.
In Quebec, customers using Rogers 5G Home Internet will now have access to a Wi-Fi 7-capable device, offering enhanced performance and reliability. The launch follows the same blueprint set by Rogers Xfinity in Calgary, where the company introduced the service in select Alberta neighborhoods.
“Canadians deserve the best connectivity experience, and the launch of a Wi-Fi 7 capable device in Quebec delivers on our plans to bring the latest technology to more Canadians,” said Bret Leech, president of the residential segment at Rogers. “Wi-Fi 7 delivers enhanced performance and better adaptability for an ultra-reliable, ultra-low-lag experience,” the executive added.
The Canadian telco noted that Wi-Fi 7 provides greater bandwidth, faster speeds, and better capacity to support homes with dozens of connected devices. Rogers also highlighted that internet usage in the home has surged over 200% in the past five years, with the average Canadian household now hosting more than 20 connected devices.
The company said that its rollout in Calgary includes its most advanced router to date. The Rogers Xfinity Pro 4G router supports multi-gig symmetrical speeds and can connect more than 200 devices simultaneously. The router is exclusive to the Xfinity Pro 4G plan, delivering up to 4 Gbps download and 1 Gbps upload speeds— the fastest on any Hybrid Fibre Coax (HFC) network globally, according to Rogers.
“This is the first in a series of launches this year to bring the latest technology to more Canadians,” Leech said during the previous Calgary announcement. “Wi-Fi 7 delivers more speed, better coverage, and better adaptability for an ultra-reliable, ultra-low-lag experience.”
Rogers plans to expand Wi-Fi 7 coverage to other regions across the country later this year.
Earlier this year, Rogers Communications started to deploy Ericsson 5G Advanced (5G-A) technology on its national network, claiming to be the first carrier in Canada to launch such technology. Rogers is rolling out Ericsson’s 5G Advanced RedCap software to power IoT devices, such as sensors, cameras and monitoring equipment. This technology enables the telco to use network resources more efficiently, while it supports longer battery life for wearables.
In February 2024, Rogers Communications said it had successfully tested 5G network slicing technology, stating that it was the first nationwide live test of this technology in Canada.
The operator tested 5G network slicing technology in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver in partnership with Ericsson on the company’s 5G SA network.
Rogers said it will use network slicing technology this year to offer a dedicated network slice for first responders to have priority on the network. The company will also use this technology to separate fixed and mobile traffic on its national 5G network and accelerate the expansion of 5G wireless home internet to more rural and remote communities across Canada, which will enable the telco to optimize and dedicate traffic flows to ensure a more reliable service for both residential and mobile users.
