Telefónica is working with Nokia to offer private 4G and 5G networks, edge/cloud computing, and industrial applications to enterprises in Spain. The duo have signed a three-year deal, they said, which pairs Telefónica’s big data, IoT, and cybersecurity services, plus its national network, with Nokia’s sundry private networking and edge computing solutions. It positions the Spanish operator as the change agent for enterprises, offering Industry 4.0 consultancy and management services. They are targeting the “industrial and logistics” sectors, they said.
A press statement also suggested the duo will, at some point, present “up to 100 digitalization solutions” to local enterprises, as pre-packed bundles to go on private 4G and 5G networks; the same statement referred to “up to 100 different Nokia solutions”, and declared at the same time that the the two companies have collected together a reference library of “more than 90 use cases with real customers” to draw upon. They called it a “unique service in Spain for private 5G networks for companies”.
Nokia’s various Digital Automation Cloud (DAC) private 4G/5G solutions for small and large enterprise venues, plus its macro-scale Modular Private Wireless (MPW) offer for larger regional installations, together with its Mission Critical Industrial Edge (MXIE) computing product and associated Industry 4.0 apps are all being offered. Telefónica Spain will offer its telco resources, including as a system integrator and digital solutions vendor via its Telefónica Tech business. “The goal is to help the industry evolve to a 4.0 model,” they said.
“[Private 5G] makes it possible to guarantee a quality of service… by prioritizing communications…. Industries such as manufacturing, ports and logistics, and [healthcare] can make [a] real leap… Many of [their] processes can be automated, optimizing resources and [costs, and]… improving product and service quality. 5G will help to make production lines more flexible, and to improve the remote control and management of heavy machinery, which will improve worker safety and sustainability by reducing energy consumption, among other benefits.”
Adrián García-Nevado, director of enterprises at Telefónica Spain, said: “This collaboration… is aligned with our vision of empowering the industry with cutting-edge technology in a new era in which AI and the use of data lead the way forward. This strategy is preceded by more than 90 use cases with real customers for the exploration of 5G capabilities.”
Rolf Albrecht, head of Nokia’s enterprise campus edge business in Europe, said: “This collaboration… will continue to enable enterprises to pave the way to digitization. Our private wireless and on-premise edge computing solutions are designed to meet the mission-critical needs of asset-intensive industries, providing them with benefits beyond connectivity, including increased worker safety and reduced emissions.”
