Nokia furthers private network play with two manufacturing deployments

Industry 4.0 -- Nokia is exhibiting this week at Hannover Messe in Germany, the big European trade fair for industrial automation

Both private network deployments involve the Nokia Digital Automation Cloud solution

Nokia announced two 5G private network deployments yesterday: One in Brazil at the manufacturing facilities of electronics provider Flex Brazil, and another at MEXT, the Turkish Employers’ Association of Metal Industries Technology Center, in Turkey. Both deployments involve the vendor’s Digital Automation Cloud (DAC) solution, which provides on-demand, private wireless network. The solution is offered as-a-service and combines plug-and-play 4.9G/LTE and 5G industrial-grade network connectivity with on-premise edge computing. This combination, stated the company, provides “the data management and processing to support real-time applications for smart manufacturing, predictive maintenance, remote operations and many other applications.”

Flex will also utilize Nokia’s digital twin technology to  create a twin of the private 5G network and its connected devices, allowing the company to better monitor network operations and predict maintenance. Further, the Brazilian company will experiment with Nokia Bell Labs innovations to explore advanced use cases, such as deterministic networking for reconfigurable production lines.

“The partnership will leverage our strength in advanced networking and mission-critical communications with Flex long experience in manufacturing and supply chain innovation,” commented Marcelo Entreconti, head of enterprise for Latin America at Nokia. “Together, we will explore the power of Industry 4.0 to transform how we manufacture and distribute goods in this new digital world.”

At MEXT, Nokia is connecting more than 10 existing manufacturing use cases with additional use cases planned. “With the deployment of private wireless Nokia Digital Automation Cloud in our technology center, the whole Turkish industry will experience a cutting-edge 5G solution, which comes with Nokia’s expertise of hundreds of private wireless deployments around the globe,” said Efe Erdem, executive director of MEXT Technology Center.

Nokia’s DAC solution has also been deployed by Tideworks Technology, a wholly owned subsidiary of Carrix, at the Port of Seattle, Terminal 5, and in 2020, the vendor deployed industrial-grade 5G Standalone (SA) private wireless networking for the 5G4KMU project, which spans five leading research centers in the state of Baden-Württemberg, in Germany.
