NNNCo said that the new IoT network has the capacity to support more than 600,000 IoT sensors
Australian IoT operator National Narrowband Network Co. has launched its IoT network for the business community of the city of Gold Coast, the company said in a release.
The city of Gold Coast worked with NNNCo to built what it claims is Australia’s largest city-owned commercial-grade Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN), with the capability to support more than 600,000 IoT sensors and real-time management tools.
NNNCo is in charge of the operation of the new IoT LoRaWAN network, which covers the entire Gold Coast Local Government Area (LGA), across 1,300 square kilometers.
“We aimed high when embarking on this project as we want to become the most connected, liveable and efficient city in Australia. Today, we have the nation’s largest city-owned IoT networks using LoRaWAN technology. It has the potential to transform businesses and even education,” said Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate.
“This allows us to achieve fantastic community outcomes such as linking school speed signs to the network and monitoring our City smart water meters which to date, have detected around 11,000 minor water leaks. This saves the community money and saves council time,” Tate added.

Earlier this year, Universal Communications Group (UCG) and NNNCo had announced a strategic alliance agreement to offer IoT end-to-end solutions to smart cities and smart utilities across Australia and New Zealand. UCG is a supplier of network design, construction, operations, maintenance, and project management services. The company works with Australia and New Zealand’s largest telecommunications operators, and its local government clients include City of Gold Coast and Lake Macquarie City Council.
