Austrian operator Hutchinson Drei has set up a LoRaWAN network in upper Austria, parts of lower Austria, Vienna and the Burgenland region, the telco said in a release.
Drei said it is currently working with its partner SPL TELE in the expansion of the LoRaWAN network.
The carrier said that the expansion of the network in other regions across Austria is progressing at a fast pace.
“LoRaWAN from Drei is particularly suitable for industrial firms, energy providers, cities, municipalities, retail and facility management and saves companies from setting up their own networks for their locations. The management is 100% by Drei, including support for network servers and gateways in Austria, security monitoring and updates, software updates and 24/7 monitoring,” the telco said.
The telco said that Austrial companies LaaPlus and Nebily are already using Drei’s LoRaWAN network.
Real estate company LaaPlus, based in Laa an der Thaya, uses LoRaWAN from Drei for smart meters on around 180 heat meters in order to regularly export consumption values via the IoT platform. LaaPlus is planning to expand the use of the LoRaWAN network to include water meters.
Meanwhile, Nebily uses LoRaWAN for pest control as well as air quality and temperature monitoring via sensors in supermarket branches. After a successful pilot test, Nebily plans to roll out the solution throughout Austria.
Drei noted that some potential uses of the new network include smart city and industrial applications as well as the transmission of measurement data from heat, water, gas and electricity meters to record current consumption.
Drei started trials of a 5G Standalone network in capital Vienna in July 2021. Drei claimed to be the first of the three telecommunications providers in Austria to start tests for this technology. The operator carried out these 5G SA tests at its headquarters and the surrounding area in Vienna’s Floridsdorf district.
For the commercial launch of 5G standalone, Drei bought its own 5G licenses for 700 and 1,500 MHz frequencies last year, which the company will fully use for 5G standalone.
Drei also said that it aims to reach nationwide coverage with its 5G SA network in the future.
Drei, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison Holdings, also launched commercial 5G services in Austria after the company had secured 100 megahertz of 5G-suitable 3.5GHz spectrum covering all twelve designated regions of Austria in March 2019.
Drei has been working with Chinese vendor ZTE in its commercial 5G deployment.
Some of the cities in which the telco provides 5G are Linz, Vienna, Graz, Innsbruck and Salzburg.
