The third Latin America region will join Santiago and São Paulo
Google Cloud has announced plans to open a new Mexico region. The effort is part of the company’s $1.2 billion, five-year planned expansion throughout Latin America. When the new Mexico region launches, it will Google’s third such region in the geographical area, joining São Paulo, Brazil and Santiago, Chile.
Regions are the highest level of Google’s infrastructure hierarchy. Each region comprises zones where Google Cloud customers can host resources. These give Google Cloud customers layers of fault tolerance and improved app availability and uptime as necessary. At latest count, Google now operates 34 regions comprising 103 zones around the globe.
Speaking from the government’s perspective, Dr. Juan Carlos Sarmiento Tovilla said that the new cloud region in Mexico will enable public sector organizations to use the cloud efficiently and securely. Tovilla, the Director General of Information Systems at Mexico’s Federal Court of Administrative Justice, also sees the new Google Cloud region as an important accelerator for Spanish-language technology.
“It is important to mention that the computer developments in Mexico are highly specialized so they can become important references for other Spanish-speaking countries,” he said.
Eduardo Lopez, President, Latin America, Google Cloud, called the expansion into Mexico the latest investment Google has made to support enterprise and public sector digital transformation efforts in Mexico. He counted off some other improvements Google has recently made in the area.
“In the last year, we’ve opened a support center to boost local companies, as well as global companies with operations in Mexico. We also opened a delivery center and grew our team in Monterrey to support the local ecosystem. Meanwhile, with initiatives such as Capacita+, Grow with Google for Women in STEM, and learning programs in the southeast of the country, we are working to grow digital skills and training opportunities for technologists in Mexico,” he said.
Google continues to pour billions into global infrastructure to compete with Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and other hyperscalers in a race to develop regional access that everyone around the world can use. While each hyperscaler has their terminology and areas of speciality, all of them continue to plow money into developing points of presence and inter-data center connectivity to help improve their global wide area networks (WANs).
Google has continued to bring online new regions throughout 2022, both internationally and closer to home. Google Cloud expanded its domestic operations in May with a new Columbus, Ohio region. Google added a new region in Milan, Italy last month. What’s more, Google Cloud and local partner Telecom Italia also plan to spin up another Google Cloud region in the Italian city of Turin. The company has plans to add more regions to the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East before the end of the year.
