The Next G Alliance is an initiative to advance North American wireless technology leadership over the next decade with the initial focus on 6G systems
ATIS’ Next G Alliance and Japan’s Beyond 5G Promotion Consortium (B5GPC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to cooperate on future 6G wireless networks.
Launched by the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS), the Next G Alliance is an initiative to advance North American wireless technology leadership over the next decade, through private-sector-led efforts with the initial focus on as-yet-unstandardized 6G systems.
The MoU stipulates how the two organizations may exchange information and publications related to 6G wireless networks. It also covers how they may engage in collaborative research and development projects including jointly organizing international communication and exchange events and establishing and implementing cooperative joint projects and programs.
“The Next G Alliance takes a holistic view of the global 6G marketplace and broader environment and has created the North American 6G vision and mapped the steps to achieve it in the National 6G Roadmap,” said ATIS President and CEO Susan Miller. “Cooperation between the Next G Alliance and the Beyond 5G Promotion Consortium will advance both organizations’ objectives in the development of the future global 6G mobile wireless ecosystem.”
Earlier this month, Japan’s Beyond 5G Promotion Consortium (B5PC) and Europe’s 6G Smart Networks and Services Industry Association signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to boost cooperation on next-generations networks.
The areas of cooperation as part of the agreement include the exchange of information, as well as cooperation in the following matters:
-Vision of 6G
-Technology exploitation and dissemination to ensure awareness, understanding and involvement and finally adoption
-Requirements on 6G
-Discussions on basic system concepts, architecture and use cases
-Support for global regulatory process in identification of frequency bands and spectrum arrangement for 6G technologies
-Identification of common interest, building of consensus and collaboration to support development of globally harmonized standards
-Promoting cooperation among European and Japanese R&D organizations and industries
-Use cases of 6G and other topics.
“B5GPC is a driving force of promotion of Beyond 5G in Japan and has shared its vision of Beyond 5G for realizing the new generation mobile wireless network of Beyond 5G in the 2030s,” said B5GPC President Makoto Gonokami. “The collaboration with B5GPC and the Next G Alliance is a key to achieve our goals of developing Beyond 5G in the world.”
Meanwhile, in December of 2021, ATIS’ Next G Alliance and the 5G Forum in Korea had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to boost cooperation in next-generation mobile communications.
Collaboration between the two organizations may also include: exchange of information regarding 6G technology trends; discussion on developing 6G roadmap; collaboration on global standardization and spectrum; analysis of socioeconomic aspects of 6G, and other areas as agreed between the two organizations regarding 6G promotion.
The initial commercial deployments of 6G technology are forecast to take place between 2028 and 2029, according to global tech market advisory firm ABI Research.
The research firm also said it expects the first standards for 6G to be ready by 2026.
