The city of Philadelphia in the US is deploying lighting, sensors, and networking technologies from Cisco and CIMCON Lighting as it seeks to be “one of the leading smart cities in the United States”.
The new NearSky lighting platform from CIMCON, running lighting controls, air quality monitors, and vehicle and people traffic counters, among other features, is being installed as part of a trial, as the city plots out its SmartCityPHL smart-city initiative.
CIMCON Lighting is providing the lighting controls. Cisco is providing digital surveillance cameras, video analytics software, and networking technology. The trial is on Arch Street, in the city’s downtown. Illinois based public-sector technology solutions provider CDW is supplying the kit to Philadelphia, in all cases.
Meanwhile, CIMCON Lighting based in Bedford, Massachusetts, has confirmed the appointment of fromer AST&T IoT chief Mobeen Khan as chief operating officer. Khan joined CIMCON from AT&T in April. He was previously general manager and associate vice president of AT&T’s IoT business unit.
Richard Montanez, deputy commissioner for transport in Philadelphia’s streets department, said: “We are looking at technology that allows us to leverage our existing streetlight infrastructure to evaluate and deploy smart city technologies. This technology gives us the flexibility to deploy the solutions we need now and address future requirements as our City’s needs evolve.”

CIMCON’s NearSky platform includes a streetlight-mounted edge data processor that captures, aggregates, and distributes data from a wide array of sensors and devices. The platform also includes cloud-based data management software, which allows cities to securely aggregate, analyse, and act on the data collected.
Earlier this month, CIMCON confirmed a deal with Syracuse in New York State.
