American Tower’s LoRaWAN network in Brazil has passed 400,000 connected devices. The company has set target two million or more by the end of 2019, deployed for a range of IoT applications.
LoRa maker Semtech, whose protocol, technology and gateways is at the heart of the Brazil rollout, pointed in particular to the prominence of metering applications and smart city networks in the American Tower network in Brazil.
American Tower’s LoRaWAN-based network in Brazil now covers the metro areas of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte. These urban centres account for around 25 per cent of the Brazilian GDP, said Semtech in a news announcement.
The American Tower rollout plan will see LoRaWAN connectivity in the vicinity of 50 per cent of the Brazilian GDP, or approximately 80 cities, by mid-2019.

We can continue to play a key role in the deployment of telecommunications infrastructure to support advanced use cases for a number of years to come.”
Vivek Mohan, director of IoT in Semtech’s wireless and sensing products group, said: “The increasing deployment of large scale LoRaWAN-based networks is a growing trend in IoT adoption globally… Latin America represents an important market for IoT adoption as part of the deployment of more efficient networks.”
