Keysight Technologies inks 5G deal with China Telecom

The U.S. firm also secured a 5G collaboration agreement with Korean carrier SK Telecom

Keysight Technologies announced it has extended its collaboration with China Telecom to accelerate commercial deployment of 5G technology.

The extended collaboration supports China Telecom’s 5G New Radio (NR) device trials using Keysight’s 5G NR network emulation solutions, based on the company’s UXM 5G wireless test platform, for protocol and radio frequency (RF) performance validation.

Keysight highlighted that its 5G test solutions enable China Telecom ensure new 5G devices comply with the latest 3GPP 5G NR Release 15 specifications prior to commercial launch.

“China Telecom is actively promoting commercial deployment of 5G technology,” said Baorong Li, general manager of Terminal R&D Center of Guangdong Research Institute, China Telecom. “Leveraging Keysight’s 5G network emulation solutions will enable us to greatly accelerate development and deployment of our 5G technology and establish a leadership position in the industry.”

The firm also said that  early collaborations with leading chipset and device manufacturers has enabled Keysight to launch 5G solutions that support sub-6 GHz and millimeter wave frequencies for comprehensive protocol, RF, conformance and performance testing.

“Our extended collaboration with China Telecom highlights the global industry adoption of Keysight’s 5G network emulation solutions that help ensure 5G NR devices perform as expected on leading mobile operators’ networks,” said Kailash Narayanan, vice president and general manager of wireless devices and operators at Keysight Technologies. “Keysight is committed to accelerating 5G technology in China and around the world and support the delivery of enhanced mobile broadband use cases.”

Keysight Technologies also said it has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Korean carrier SK Telecom to collaborate on 5G network design development and testing technology.

The MoU covers development of 5G device performance validation technology, test cases and processes to help verify that new products perform as intended on the mobile operator’s network, Keysight Technologies said. Under the deal, the two companies will also collaborate on Massive MIMO and beamforming technologies.

“We are excited to extend our collaboration with SK Telecom to support their early deployments of 5G on mmWave frequencies,” stated Kailash Narayanan, vice president and general manager of Wireless Devices and Operators at Keysight Technologies.

“SK Telecom is targeting seamless 5G communications quality by leveraging wider bandwidths in mmWave spectrum,” says Jongkwan Park, head of Network Technology R&D Center for SK Telecom. “We are pleased to collaborate with Keysight, the company with 5G expertise and solutions in this field, to help support our ambitious 5G deployment goals.”

SK Telecom recently announced that it had selected compatriot firm Samsung Electronics for the provision of 5G solutions, including a 3GPP Release 15-compliant core and 5G NR Radio Access Network.

SK Telecom and Samsung Electronics said they were expecting to begin 5G commercial deployments in October 2018 using the 5G Non-Standalone architecture.

Ericsson and Nokia will also supply 5G equipment for SK Telecom, according to previous reports.
