Arm looks to move IoT from pilots to production
Treasure Data, an enterprise data management company, has been acquired by Arm for an undisclosed sum, adding to its internet of things (IoT) ecosystem. This announcement follows the company’s recent acquisition of Stream Technologies which was made public in June 2018.
According to a statement from Arm, the acquisition of “Treasure Data is the final piece of our IoT enablement puzzle. Its technology, along with that of another recent acquisition (Stream) for connectivity management, combined with Arm Mbed Cloud and our knowledge of the hardware foundation creates something entirely new. We call it the Arm Pelion IoT Platform.”
The Pelion IoT Platform is said to enable companies to seamlessly and securely connect and manage devices and data at any scale. Designed to work on public and private clouds, on-premise and in hybrid environments, it is said to provide the “ultimate flexibility” in IoT architectures.
Ranging from device management to data management, the platform delivers a combined partner ecosystem of over 140 partners spanning silicon, mobile, network operators, channel technology providers and others.
“There are many vertical IoT Platforms focusing on specific device classes,” continues the statement. “Some also focus on specific kinds of data insights they’ll support. There are vendor-specific platforms that seek to tie customers into specific clouds. The linking word here is ‘specific’.
“The Pelion IoT Platform is different because it is a truly horizontal platform capable of managing any number or type of devices and connectivity, dealing with any type of data (internal and external) and linking to any cloud. In short, it offers the ability to tie into ‘Any device, Any data, Any cloud’ – we think of it as a triple-A IoT experience.”
Treasure Data will continue as a standalone technology service for existing and new customers. The company was founded in 2011, with a mission to transform how technology and humans interacted. It has helped more than 352 customers, has seen triple-digit revenue growth YoY and made its debut in the Gartner Magic Quadrant on Data Management Solutions for Analytics.
In a blog post, Hiro Yoshikawa, CEO and co-founder, Treasure Data, expands on the company’s new areas of focus: “Together with Arm, we are looking at a platform of technologies from device-to-data: secure harvesting of data from networks of IoT devices, to the convergence of disparate data streams, and the visualization of that data and the generation of insights leading to actions.
“Our data management platform is well-established, but we know there’s much more we can do to help companies understand and interact with their customers. We think we’ve really only just uncovered the tip of the data management and insights iceberg.”
In April, Arm attended Hannover Messe and spoke about the need for more deployments of IoT “The market hasn’t come as far as we’d hoped; it is pretty fragmented – by the time the customer sees the value from IoT, it’s too long,” said Hima Mukkamala, general manager of IoT cloud services at Arm. “We want to see customer adoption; we need customer production. No more pilots.”
