Russian telcos aims to deploy large 5G trials during the Fifa World Cup 2018
Ericsson and Russian telco Rostelecom announced they will carry out a 5G trial at the Hermitage Museum, in Saint Petersburg. The two companies said the trial is scheduled for the first half of next year.
The partners will deploy a 5G trial zone on the premises of the Hermitage Museum using a mix of virtual reality, haptic technology, and robotics.
In the preparation phase, Ericsson will deliver the full range of solutions required for the trial and provide expertise for the implementation and integration. The solutions include Ericsson Radio System. The network will be operated in the 3.5GHz frequency band and support LTE/LTE-advanced devices.
“We are actively involved in the deployment of 5G networks around the world and develop use cases for all industries. The world is becoming increasingly digital and 5G creates new opportunities for businesses and society,” Sebastian Tolstoy, head of Ericsson in Russia, said. “The introduction of innovative digital solutions is a top priority in Russia and the partnership between Ericsson, Rostelecom, and the Hermitage is an important step in this direction.”
In October, Nokia and Rostelecom have signed an agreement to set up a 5G pilot zone. The 5G pilot zone will be located within the Skolkovo Innovation Center, which is a high tech business area that is being built at Skolkovo, near Moscow
Nokia and Rostelcom agreed upon scenarios of possible implementation of 5G wireless technologies for different industries.
The telco has recently signed an agreement with compatriot telco MegaFon to jointly develop a 5G network. As part of the cooperation, the two Russian telcos will develop optimal scenarios for rolling out 5G networks based on international experience and subject to the specifics of the Russian mobile communications market.
MegaFon and Rostelcom said they will evaluate the possibility to create a joint venture to construct the 5G network. MegaFon and Rostelecom also said they plan to set up a working group that will propose options for rolling out 5G networks in the 3.4-3.6 GHz and 26 GHz frequency bands.

Russian federal radio frequencies commission SRFC has prepared a draft decision on the allocation of bands for operators wishing to test 5G systems, according to international press reports.
The regulator plans to allocate frequencies in the 25.25-29.5 GHz band to mobile operator Beeline, which will be used to test a 5G networks in Moscow and Saint Petersburg, as well as in the Voronezh, Saint Petersburg, Moscow, Krasnodar, Stavropol and Samara regions and in the Republic of Tatarstan.
The Russian telecoms regulator also plans to approve the allocation of spectrum to mobile operator MTS in the 27.5-28.35GHz band for the launch of fragments of 5G networks in Moscow, St Petersburg, Kazan, Rostov and Sochi.
